Einstein's High School Diploma
contrary to the urban legend, Einstein did well in school. Here's a picture of his high school diploma .. and yes this is authentic.

hahah, really? thats the first time i heard. basically, all the people on my blogger thought it was a girls phone. now its not, so its good. yay! its cute right?
The main reason behind the proliferation of the High School myth is that Einstein did not finish school in the traditional way. He seemed to have some disputes with some of his teachers and graduating early in a non-traditional (just exams) way was the solution.
Hey
I can't find the Hadith... where is it?
uhm as far as I can read it, his grades are all E's and F's with only one C and 3 D's... the higher the number the worse the grade. So a 1 would be the best you could score. Its also a lil weird that this is from a swiss school, even though I thought he only wen to school in germany... anyway if anything this confirms the urban legend ;)
In response to Sebastian: I finished highschool in Switzerland, just like Einstein did. The best grade is 6, the worst one is 1. This is totally opposite to the grade system in Germany, and that is maybe also the reason why the myth was born.
uhmmm no, 6 is the best grade here. it depends somewhat on where in switzerland you go to school, but generally a 6 corresponds to an A.
I read a biography of Einstein. Evidently, he DID fail a math class. But it was because he was totally bored out of his mind and stopped going.
Even if the picture is authentic, it does not disprove the "urban legend" that Einstein did not excel in high school.
According to PBS's American Masters, Einstein's grades were "fair" in high school (in Munich), and then he was expelled (perhaps due to "some disputes with some of his teachers" as vonaurum stated above). But he later re-enrolled in high school, this time in Zurich. Perhaps this time around his grades were good, as shown in the picture posted here.
Einstin, as the document says, took the Matura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matura). 5's happen to be the highest score except in two high calsses where the highest is 8. The old system was probalby different. but as you can see he did well in many classes, including algebra.
What is your proof that this diploma is authentic? You're merely asserting this, and I have no reason to believe you without proof.
who cares if he passed or not anyways, he was a freakin genius
If authentic, my guess is that he had simply taken these tests to prove his level of education.
In addition, this test is an artifact of Kanton Aargau and not in the Kanton of Zurich.
He might have been applying for or had wanted a job in this area.
The current post on Boingboing (see the update below the post) adds some insight to the authenticity of the diploma.
This would be an average of 5.0 which is, .... OK.
...In the German school system a 1 ist the best you can get...a 5 ist ein awful Noten.
Fake.
Ummm HELLO if ANYONE knows ANYTHING about german schools these are clearly HORRIBLE marks... the german grading system is 1-6 (i was an exchange student there for 3 months). 1 is like A+, and 5 and 6 are both fails. 4 is like a D...this is stupid. you guys are dumb
I thouught everyone knew that Einstein sucked in school...given his quote: "The only thing that ever interfered with my learning was my education..."
At http://tinyurl.com/kjy3k there is a copy of Einstein's Hight School Diploma (Credit: Albert Einstein Archives,The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel 29-229 [see the number reported on diploma ]) ... it's the same image that is used here. Besides, in the Sugimoto's book (I've the italian version of this book) there is a table that shows the Einstein's scores: there are the same ones here reported.
HAHA, most of these idiots dont even read the previous posts...thanks ebaumsworld, you sure bring in the winners.
I believe the myth that Albert Einstein didn't excel in high school was fabricated by those who aren't excelling in high school and need justification.
you all are wasting your time...
e=mc^2
enough said.
Wow... good grades. Nice to see the Swiss grade very fairly compared to the American school system.
Yawn... easily forged
Just found this post by chance while googling for other stuff. In any case, I should restate what previous people have said: Kanton Aargau is a Swiss canton and in Switzerland 1 is the worst grade, 4 is sufficiency and 6 is the maximum. This makes Einstein an excellent student in Maths and Physics (though a rather poor one in French... for obvious reasons!). For the chronicle: I'm Swiss and have actually been at Einstein's High School in Aarau when participating at the selections for the Swiss team for the International Physics Olympiad a couple of years ago...
I know someone who was a student and Einstein was his professor. Einstein said "You know, when I was young I wasn't good at math."
I've heard Hermann Minkowski, Einstein's math teacher at Eidgenössische Polytechnikum, said that Einstein wouldn't amount to anything.
He had A.D.D. and his brain worked different then "normal" people.
Case closed!
If he came up with E=mc^2 what would stop him from gettin an A in high school math, cum on i got 3 of them and he ant even my reletive......
